How do you keep your child or children entertained on holiday?

Well this year, I’ve had the pleasure of being woken up in the middle of the night by hysterical laughter only to find it was Miniminx laughing out loud in bed in her sleep and sitting bolt upright, holding her sides laughing.

Was it a memory of the day before?

Maybe it was when we were frolicking in the sea when unbeknownst to me my bikini top had come off (ha, ha, ha)

Was it when we were playing snooker and I potted the white, not once, but three times in a row? (you try using a snooker cue with sand and sun lotion all over you, not easy)

Or when I was laughing in the sea and got smacked in the face by a wave and my laughter became a choking gurgle?

Or when we were playing bat and ball and I hit the ball onto someone’s balcony and did a sly bellycrawl across it to get it back…not my best look

Or the day I could hardly sit down because I had a sunburned bum?

Who knows.

I digress. Last year we purchased Dominos. No, not the pizza, but the old pub game. It’s worth it’s weight in gold and when we travel we always take it with us when we go to dinner and play like demons.

slight of hand

The trouble is that Miniminx has a mark on the double six and knows where it is so it can make the game a little skewed. And she’s got quite a slight of hand when it comes to picking up the tiles as well.

The great thing about this game is that it is portable and light and easy – apparently it is so retro that it’s now a cool thing to do, but I don’t believe that. It’s just fun and it’s great to play in restaurants as we have something to do between ordering and the food arriving.

  2. Dominos! What a brilliant idea. My family always took cards and played a game which includes, at one point, sticking a card on your forehead. Looks very classy, posher restaurants always look a little askance. My mother always used to get the cards out when we went to places, so much so that now we are well into our 30s the tradition still remains. May you be playing dominos between ordering and the starters for another 25 years at least. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. x

We have 5 kids (I know. What were we thinking?) so we’re always looking for ways to keep them entertained when we go out. We download a lot of audiobooks. There’s plenty of sites where you can get them, but we use this site a lot because it’s free and all the stories are original. Here’s the link if anyone is interested.
