The life and times of a happy go lucky blogger in London
a beautiful story of Art, love and the Great Wall of China

I often rave about Jezebel the straight talking women’s blog based in the US. It’s often surprising and I just loved this story about an art installation at the MoMA, called The Artist is Present, from March 14 through May 31, 2010…if only I could make it over there to see it myself.

And thankfully, even though that is Sharon Stone in the photo below who sat as part of the installation by Marina Abromovic, it’s not just about pretty faces and A-listers.

The artist has had many different people include themselves in her installation. She sits daily and allows people to sit opposite her and talk, for as long as they want. The piece is made incredibly poignant by the image below of her sitting with her former partner and artistic collaborator who has joined her artistic piece.

They were in a relationship and worked together for 12 years on many projects. They planned a huge trip to China to do a major work on the Great Wall. With all the time it took to create the piece, they had both moved on and the relationship was over. That was not the end of the idea. Both the artists, Abramović and Ulay, were able to function on a higher creative plane and decided to make a spiritual journey which would be the significant, symbolic and creative end to their relationship. They walked the Great Wall of China, starting from opposite ends, and after three months, they met up in the middle. As Abramović described it: “That walk became a complete personal drama. Ulay started from the Gobi desert and I from the Yellow Sea. After each of us walked 2500 km, we met in the middle and said good-bye.”

Yet here they are again, reaching out to each other across a table. She in her scarlet robe and he in converse trainers and sombre get up. What a wonderful image.
