Waterloo Road v Skins – discuss…
Categories: blogging mums

I’ve watched two teen dramas this week and I’m stunned at the issues they’ve both managed to pack into the hour long slot they occupy.

I found Skins ruthlessly gritty and with it’s smattering of precocious post adolescent sexuality, perhaps a little too gratuitous. In fact, scrub that, nihilistic. Gritty dramas like Shameless have humour and Skins lacks that. It’s the evil twin of Bennetton ads which we loved to bang on about in the 80s and 90s. It’s gripping though.

Waterloo Road is on much earlier and it does deal with huge adolescent events but with the adult storyline which is woven through, it has a much broader appeal and it’s easy to forgive the bigger storylines because they’re handled with tact.

I’m just wondering if this entertainment is actually of value to teenagers and ‘gasp’ us parents!

What do you think?

I love Skins. You should check out Misfits, if you haven’t already. Similar edge, but with some humour , admittedly dark.

Waterloo road is tosh. Its issues predictable and often handled badly and with unnecessary drama. Bob the Builder is in it FFS.

Wow – didn’t expect that response. Interesting all the same! I wonder if it’s just the difference in BBC and C4 production sensiblities or licence holder fear that makes it that way.
