Film: Oz the Great and Powerful
Categories: blogging mums, family, movies

The Wizard of Oz was one of the most memorable films of my childhood and remains so to this day. I loved the books and the author L Frank Baum was himself quite an amazing character. He started writing about the age of 10 and would self publish by typesetting and printing his own short story books by hand which to me, makes him a sort of pre-digital blogger!

This new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, like Wicked the Musical is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, but I think that’s where the comparisons may end. Looking at the images below, the film is guaranteed to be a visually stunning treat and is out on March 8th and so we’re just a few days away from this new Ozian spectacular.

Having missed the pre-screenings, I’m going to be dashing out to the cinema asap to see this one. You’ve probably seen the ads but I just love the trailer and these film stills – aren’t they gorgeous?

I can’t wait to see Rachel Weisz back on the big screen, she’s one of my favourite actresses and we just watched the ghostly thriller Dream House this weekend so glad she’s in something a bit more upbeat, but possibly just as scary.

The film has a great cast, including James Franco (maybe I can finally shake off that image I have of him playing the weird rock star slimeball that 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon has a one night stand with) and amazing effects.

So far the review are looking good the filma has a 7.2 on IMDB and a not so great 53 from Metacritics but that’s only based on 5 reviews. I’ll make my own mind up. Have a peak at the trailer and the film notes below.

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great wizard—and just maybe into a better man as well.
